In what ways can we design and facilitate math learning experiences that create opportunities for each and every learner? Across two days, we will explore the urgent need to adjust our math instruction to create onramps for historically underserved learners to increase their access to high quality math understanding. This interactive Institute will include discussion, math explorations, reading and planning.

Facilitators

Wendy Ward Hoffer

Wendy Ward Hoffer, PEBC’s Senior Director of Content Development and Publications, believes that math education is an important lever for civil rights activism. She designs and presents professional learning for teachers at all levels and across the curriculum focused on creating learning opportunities that honor students’ thinking. Wendy, a proud nerd, is the author of five books on teaching for understanding and the co-creator of PEBC’s math and science institutes, as well as many of our newest online courses. 

Prior to her work with PEBC, Wendy taught middle school math and science at Expeditionary Learning schools, where she earned National Board Certification. Originally from Los Angeles, Wendy is the daughter of an immigrant, attended Dartmouth College, and earned her masters degree in education from Stanford University.

Jailyn Jenkins is a Manager of Resident Development, Innovation and Coaching with the PEBC Teacher Residency. Jailyn believes that both relationships and authentically, holistic equity is at the core of successful school communities, from learners to leadership. As a coach, instructor, and leader, Jailyn specializes in S.T.E.M. education, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive teaching and leadership. 

Prior to joining PEBC, Jailyn served within the metropolitan communities of Phoenix, Arizona, and Aurora, Colorado. Some of her most recent duties include science instructional coach, district professional learning facilitator, as well as an elementary and secondary science teacher.

Jailyn has her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (S.T.E.M.) from Arizona State University and a Master’s degree in Education Administration (Principalship) from Grand Canyon University.

In her spare time, Jailyn loves giving way to her inner “travel bug” to lead her on various vacation adventures! When she is not traveling, she can be found riding Antwon the Peloton, weightlifting at the gym, and scooting through the city to taste the best food.

Lab Classroom

Optional Lab Day on Friday, January 31st

Join us after the Institute to observe effective math instruction live and in person in a PEBC lab classroom. You will enjoy an artfully facilitated half day of learning, including a pre-brief with the lab host teacher, a full lesson observation, an opportunity to debrief and ask questions, lunch onsite, and most importantly, identifying tactical take-aways that you can implement in your own school or classroom the following week.
